Dayna Chikamoto
Dayna was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. After graduating from ‘Iolani School in 2008, she began her undergraduate career at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. Her interests of meeting new people, pursuing her love of dance and being involved in community service are satisfied through her job as a Resident Advisor, active involvement in the dance community at Occidental and continuation of her independent service project of sending donated books to school children in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Dayna has a strong appreciation for diversity and loves to travel to learn about other cultures around the world. In the summer of 2006, she travelled to Japan for a couple of weeks through the generosity of the Freeman Foundation. As a Fulbright exchange participant, she will further her experiences abroad, learning about British cultures first-hand through her participation in the Summer Institute at Roehampton University in London.
--> On the trip, Dayna was our video artist. She took pictures and videos that are invaluable to all of us, because we didn't even think to take them at the time. Someday, we will have a Fulbright reunion in Hawaii where we will hopefully get to see her hula dance!

Her other interests include hiking, art, and playing music. Currently, Emma is studying Dance and International Studies at Colorado State University (CSU) on a full scholarship from the Monfort family. She participates in the Rotaract Club and the Honours Programme at CSU. As part of the Fulbright Roehampton University Summer Institute, Emma hopes to gain a better understanding of the culture of the UK and explore the field of international relations.

Jason Kowalski
Jason was born in Shaftsbury, Vermont and moved to Saratoga Springs, New York at a young age. He attends Cornell University and is a member of the Men’s fencing team and in a student-run consulting group for local businesses. He studies Industrial and Labour Relations, Economics and Information Science. Jason’s other interests include skiing, playing ultimate frisbee and writing. Jason hopes to leave the summer programme feeling that he has helped others and learned about how UK citizens feel about their country and interact with their government. Jason also hopes to gain a globally-conscious perspective; in the business-world he’ll be better able to make decisions if he can sympathise with diverse parties. On an individual level, Jason hopes to grow as a person. He feels his thinking is still provincial and that four weeks immersed in London’s way of life will greatly widen his outlook.
Malik Neal
Malik was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A graduate of West Catholic High School, Malik was a participant in the high school's International Studies Programme. As a part of the programme, Malik co-authored a small self-published book entitled "The United Nations: The Beginners’ Guide", was President of the World Affairs Club and an active member of the Cultural Diversity Club. He was also a member on the Student Steering and Advisory Committee of the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and was an intern at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. A sophomore history major at College of the Holy Cross, Malik combines his interest in international affairs with a deep love of history and politics. In 2008, Malik was awarded a $50,000 scholarship in the national debate/history competition, “Now Debate This,” for his successful argument that Abraham Lincoln was a greater president than George Washington. Malik's writings on historical and political issues have appeared in several relevant publications. In his own words, ‘attending the Summer Institute at Roehampton University will definitely aid me in achieving my goals of learning more about the larger world. The programme will offer the rare opportunity to travel aboard and explore the culture and political framework of America's strongest ally, the United Kingdom. Moreover, the programme will enable me to meet and engage with like-minded peers. Essentially, I hope to bring some part of my culture to the United Kingdom and bring back my experience to the United States to share with others. All in all, I am looking forward to the adventure!’--> On the trip, Malik unknowingly convinced us all that he will be famous someday! With such a powerful voice and stature, I would definitely not be surprised if we see Malik as a politician or famous historian someday. Oh, and he's already famous for his great toasts!
Nadia was born in Atlanta, Georgia and currently studies at Cornell University. There she majors in Industrial and Labour Relations with the hopes of one day attending law school. Prior to attending university, she was an active participant in the YMCA Leaders Club, National Honours Society, Class Council, French National Honours Society and reinstated an organisation whose purpose was to knit hats for children with cancer. Nadia travelled to South Africa where she and other students distributed items collected from a school supply and coat drive to impoverished youth and built a partnership between the Metro Atlanta YMCAs and the South African YMCAs. As a member of the Fulbright Roehampton Summer Institute, she will explore the United Kingdom through academic and cultural immersion.
--> On the trip, Nadia was our language inventor! By the end of our time in London, we all began to catch ourselves saying "dumb, mad, or OD." Examples of phrases would include, "That is DUMB expensive!" Or "That telephone booth was MAD red!"
Alex was born and raised in Kansas. She currently attends Scripps College in Claremont, California. Alex has been a member of the Scripps student government for the past two years and will serve as the Junior Class President in the fall of 2010. She is also the founder of SWEET (Scrippsies Who Endow Edible Treats) Bakery, an organisation that sells cakes and cupcakes to members of the campus and surrounding community. All profits are used to make birthday cakes for children at a local homeless shelter. Last summer, Alex served as an intern for United States Congressman Dennis Moore. Her other interests include speaking Italian, creating new desserts, watching films and sharing laughs with friends and family. As a Summer Institute participant, Alex will explore the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union, as well as the relationship between the UK government and its citizens, through various volunteer opportunities and visits to cultural and civic sites.
--> On the trip, Alex was the positive, and responsible one! While battling a chest cold for almost the entirety of the trip, Alex maintained a positive attitude AND even did wake up calls, brought people breakfast, and other very nice things. :)

--> On the trip, I was the blogger! As I kept up this blog everyday, and even did supplemental research, I have shared with anyone who reads my blog how many amazing opportunities we have had as Fulbright Summer Institute participants. We are all so entirely thankful!
