University hosts prestigious Fulbright summer school

Story Posted: 07 July 2010 (http://www.roehampton.ac.uk/news/fulbright-summer-school.html)

Roehampton University is running the first US–UK Fulbright Commission Summer Institute Programme to happen outside of the United States. Admission to the prestigious programme was the most competitive for a new programme in the 62-year history of the Fulbright Commission.

The eight participating students, who are drawn from all over the US and who have not travelled outside of the US before, are experiencing an exciting academic programme on campus at Roehampton. Drawing on the University’s academic strengths, the group will investigate the concepts of citizenship and identity and develop skills including presentation, communication and teamwork by producing a short film on what citizenship means in today’s Britain.

While in London, the students will explore British culture, with trips to theatres and other heritage and historic sites, and explore the UK–EU relationship by visiting the Houses of Parliament and Brussels, the capital of Belgium and the administrative centre of the European Union. The students will also volunteer in four local schools, and become ambassadors for studying in the UK.

Director of Recruitment and Marketing Gary Davies said: “We are very pleased to be partnering with the Fulbright Commission to deliver this programme, which will enable the students to enjoy a unique academic experience. They are meeting people from all over the world, and experiencing life as a real student in the UK. “Developing their understanding of citizenship, taught by world leaders in this field, and gaining transferable credit to their US university, they will become an ambassador for studying in the UK, and for Roehampton University.”

The programmes provide the opportunity for US high school graduates aged over 18 to come to the UK on a four- or five-week academic and cultural summer programme. The application process is competitive and applicants must have a high level of academic achievement. The programme will culminate in an awards celebration, to be attended by the Vice-Chancellor, staff and students.

Basically, I created this blog to be a collective memory of the Roehampton University Summer Institute 2010. By going through each day's events, as well as adding interactive media (such as pictures, videos, and web links), I hope I have achieved creating an all-inclusive web page full of experiences, activities, and classroom information that I gained while in London, Scotland, and Belgium on this Fulbright Program. Additionally, I hope this information will benefit any students planning to apply to the Summer Institute, and will give them an idea of how amazing this experience will be.

Enjoy!
